Hands-free cook mode

Cook with your hands covered in dough

Step-by-step cook mode is free for everyone. Say the wake word and it goes hands-free: next step, repeat that, start the timer — and a screen that never dims mid-recipe.

Say "SpiceGuy", then the command

The wake word comes first, then one short phrase. It listens between commands rather than for a button, so nothing needs a clean fingertip.

  • "Next step", "continue" or "done" moves forward
  • "Back" or "previous step" goes the other way
  • "Repeat that" or "say again" reads the step once more
  • "Start the timer", "pause", "stop" and "reset" run the clock
  • "What ingredients" reads the list back without leaving the step

The screen stays on until you are finished

A phone that sleeps at the wrong moment is why most people cook from a laptop propped against a bowl. Cook mode holds a screen wake lock for as long as the recipe is open, then releases it.

Timers are read out of the step itself

A step that says "simmer for 12 minutes" offers a 12-minute timer named after that step, so three running at once are still telling you which is which.

Questions people ask

Do I have to touch the screen at all?

No. Once cook mode is open and listening, the wake word plus a command moves through the whole recipe. You need your hands for the first tap and nothing after that.

Why is the wake word so strict?

Because a recipe step that begins "Next, add the onions" would otherwise skip itself. Only real transcriptions of "SpiceGuy" count, which is what makes it safe to leave listening while you cook.

Does it work if the kitchen is noisy?

It uses your browser's own speech recognition, so it needs a working microphone and a reasonably quiet moment to hear the wake word. Extraction fans and running taps will beat it — the on-screen controls are always there as well.

Is cook mode free?

Step-by-step cook mode is free on every plan. Voice control, the screen wake lock and concurrent named timers are part of SpiceGuy Pro.
