Nutrition Methodology
How recipe nutrition estimates are produced and how to interpret them.
Ingredient matching
The nutrition checker reads ingredient descriptions and quantities, then attempts to match usable ingredient lines with food-composition data. Where available, the interface identifies the data provider and reports how many requested ingredient lines were matched. Unmatched, ambiguous, or unsearched ingredients can make a subtotal lower than the complete dish.
Recipe totals and servings
Matched ingredient nutrients are combined into a recipe estimate. Per-serving values divide that estimate by the recipe's stated number of servings. Changing portion size, brands, drained weight, cooking loss, oil absorption, or optional garnishes can materially change the food you consume.
Confidence and limitations
- Natural-language quantities such as “a handful” or “to taste” may not be measurable.
- Ingredient substitutions and branded products can have different nutrient profiles.
- Cooking methods can change water content and serving weight.
- An estimate with unmatched ingredients is incomplete and should not replace existing reviewed values.
Using estimates responsibly
Check product packaging and professional guidance when nutrition affects allergy management, medication, pregnancy, a diagnosed condition, or another medical need. You can use the nutrition checker with exact ingredient amounts to obtain a more relevant estimate.
